At MM Flowers we strive to have a positive impact in the communities where were we operate and source from. As part of this commitment, we look to partner and invest in long-term projects with our strategic suppliers and customers that will directly benefit the lives of those impacted by our business.
We are delighted to announce that last week MM Flowers received the “Community Initiative” award from Tesco in recognition of a joint project established in one of our of key sourcing communities Naivasha, Kenya.
The ‘Lake Naivasha Childhood Nutrition and Education Programme’ at Lakeview Primary School, established in 2024, co-funded by Tesco’s Community Fund and one of our shareholders VP Group, was designed with five main goals:
Ensure no pupil is hungry at school
Better children’s long-term health and wellness through proper nutrition which leads to improved attainment at school
Construction of a kitchen garden could be used by the school and VegPro farms to teach plant husbandry and motivate pupils to be the ‘farmers of the future’
Cookery classes for pupils to teach food preparation and how to achieve the greatest nutritional benefits from food
Addressing gender stereotypes by giving boys the opportunity to learn skills in food preparation and cooking
The project is now up and running following the construction of a new kitchen and dining hall. Between the generous funding from Tesco and the commitment to provide on-going food donations from VP Group, this project will directly benefit over 1,500 children who previously did not have access to free school lunches.
The next step is to complete phase 2 of the project, which includes the construction of a nutritional garden which will benefit not only the school children, but their families and the wider community.
